Respond to an overdose

  1. Call 911.
  2. Look for the signs: unresponsive, slow or stopped breathing, blue or gray lips/fingertips, pinpoint pupils.
  3. Spray Narcan® — tilt the head back, insert the nozzle in one nostril, press the plunger.
  4. Stay with them. Give a second dose after two to three minutes if there's no response.

Test before you use

Fentanyl is increasingly mixed into other drugs without the user's knowledge. Test strips detect it before you take anything.

  1. Dissolve a small sample of the substance in water, following the ratio on the strip's packaging.
  2. Dip the strip into the solution for about 15 seconds.
  3. Lay it flat and wait two to five minutes for results.
  4. Read the lines — one line means fentanyl was detected; two lines means it wasn't. A faint line still counts as a positive result.

What's an opioid?

A class of drugs that relieve pain — includes prescription opioids (oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, methadone), fentanyl (far stronger, often found in counterfeit pills), and heroin.
