- 1. What happened to math and English placement tests?
We no longer give math and English placement tests in compliance with AB 705 legislation. The placement process involves using high school GPA and guided self-placement to help students select math and English courses. We recommend meeting with an academic counselor to select the best math and English courses to meet you educational goals.
- 2. How can I be assessed for another language like Spanish or Italian?
If you are looking to be assessed for a language other than English, please speak to the instructor of the class you wish to enroll in (for example, SPAN 203) and the instructor will arrange testing for you. Visit the Modern Languages Department web site for details.
- 3. What if I’ve taken a class or placement test at another school? Do I still need to take the placement test?
Starting Summer and Fall 2019 semesters, our placement process has changed and we are no longer giving the math and English placement tests. Please make an appointment to see a College of Marin counselor with your transcripts and other school’s test scores to assist with your course placement.
- 4. What can I do to prepare for the ESL placement test?

- 5. Where can I find my College of Marin student ID number?
Log on to your MyCOM portal. Click on the “Student” tab and then any of the links under “Registration (such as Enrollment Priority).” Your student ID number will appear alongside your name. Your student ID number may also appear on any paperwork from the college such as a schedule of classes you are enrolled in. Your student number will begin with a capital letter M followed by eight numbers, e.g., M00555555.
- 6. How long does it take to complete the ESL placement test?
The ESL test is timed for 45 minutes.
- 7. How soon will I see my results of the ESL placement test?
The ESL test results are available immediately after you finish the test.
- 8. What do I do after the test?
Typically, new students will make an appointment to see a counselor after completing a placement test. Please visit the Registration web page for more information.
- 9. Where do I take the ESL placement test?
There are scheduled Noncredit ESL orientations on specific dates and times at the College of Marin Kentfield campus. Please see the ESL web site for more information.
- 10. Where can I park and is there a parking fee?
Please see the parking maps of the Kentfield campus. Kentfield Campus Parking Lot 1 and Lot 6 are the main parking lots. Daily parking permits cost $4 and may be purchased from dispensers in most parking lots. A daily parking permit is required for all lots except the free parking lots: Lot 13 at the Kentfield campus (Lot 13 closes at 5 pm). Please visit the Parking page for more details.
