Transfer Guide: Steps to a Four-Year College or University
Transferring to a four-year institution can feel overwhelming, but with preparation and planning, it is achievable. College of Marin (COM) counselors and the Transfer and Career Center are here to support you. Meeting with a counselor is strongly recommended to create a personalized transfer plan. Below is a general pathway to guide your process:
Step 1: Identify Your Major and Career Interests
- Begin career exploration with a self-assessment at California Career Zone.
- Enroll in a counseling course such as:
- COUN 133: Career Exploration
- COUN 130: Career Life Skills Planning
- Schedule a career counseling appointment with COM’s Career Services and Internship Coordinator (email: [email protected]).
- Explore resources on the Transfer and Career Center website under Major/Career Exploration.
- Remember: choosing a major is a process that requires time, reflection, and research.
Step 2: Decide Which Colleges or Universities to Transfer To
- Review COM’s presentation on Choosing Your Best Fit School. Create a list of top-choice and backup schools.
- Consider factors such as: cost, location, campus culture, prestige, distance from home, career services, internships, and majors offered.
- Explore resources on the Transfer and Career Center website under Choosing a University.
- Participate in campus tours organized by the Transfer Club.
- Meet with admissions representatives from various colleges. Many schools schedule regular visits with COM students.
- Sign up for the Transfer Email List to receive notifications.
- Browse the list of admissions representatives and their appointment calendars.
Step 3: Create and Follow a Transfer Plan
- Meet with a counselor each semester to update your Student Education Plan (SEP). Track progress in DegreeWorks.
- Complete required English courses (ENGL 150 and ENGL 151 or ENGL 155) and math courses early.
- Follow the IGETC pattern (for UC transfer) or CSU GE Breadth pattern (for CSU transfer), unless you are pursuing STEM fields (e.g., Engineering, Biological/Physical Sciences) that require extensive lower-division preparation.
- Use assist.org to identify required or recommended major preparation courses for UC and CSU campuses.
- For private or out-of-state schools, review admission requirements directly on each institution’s website.
Step 4: Research Application Requirements
Ask yourself the following questions for each school:
- What is the minimum GPA required?
- How many transferable units must be completed? Is there a maximum?
- What are the general education requirements?
- What are the pre-major requirements for your chosen field?
- What is the application deadline?
Note: Some CSU campuses have impacted majors that require supplemental applications. Research these early to avoid delays.
